What to Expect During Your First Live, Online Yoga Class

You just booked your first live, online yoga class–well done! Now, if you are curious about what to expect during this first class, you have come to the right place. In several ways, the experience is similar to an in-person class but with the convenience of practicing from home or any location. Your instructor will teach you a personalized class in real-time and offer live feedback in order to address your unique wellness goals.


How the Live Yoga Class will Flow:


  • Introduction: The instructor will introduce herself, offer an overview of the session, and will ask about your energy level that day as well as any injuries or special considerations she should keep in mind.

  • Flow of the Class: The class generally begins with a few minutes of mindful breathing and stillness. Then, you will begin to explore gentle and more dynamic postures (asanas). The class will wind down with seated or supine poses and conclude with the final resting pose (Savasana).

  • Live Feedback: If you choose to have your camera on, the instructor will have the opportunity to offer personalized suggestions, variations, or adaptations to the poses you are practicing. Additionally, she will be able to address any issues with alignment so all postures are practiced mindfully and safely.

  • Interaction: Your instructor is there for you should you have any questions or need modifications for postures. This class is personalized for you, and she wants it to be a comfortable, fulfilling experience.



Preparing Your Space and Technology


Prior to your class, it’s important to have your space and technology prepared. Here are some helpful guidelines:


  • Create a Calm Space: The beauty of online yoga is that you can practice anywhere your heart desires–ideally, this will be an area that is quiet, well-lit, and has minimal distractions. Additionally, you will need space for your yoga mat and a small area in front of your mat to position your device. 

  • Test Your Technology: Confirm that your internet connection is stable and your device (laptop, tablet, or phone) is fully charged. If possible, it’s a good idea to test your camera and microphone beforehand to ensure there are no issues with visibility or audio. 

  • Lighting: Choose a well-lit area so your instructor can see you easily. Natural light works best, but soft indoor lighting is fine as long as it's not too dim.


What Equipment Do You Need?


The beauty of yoga is that you don’t need much, especially for a virtual class. Here are some essentials:


  • Yoga Mat: A non-slip yoga mat is ideal for providing comfort and ease of movement.

  • Props*: Depending on the type of class, it could be helpful to have yoga blocks, a strap, or a blanket handy. If you don’t own these, household items like a sturdy book or towel can be substituted.

  • Water Bottle: Have a water bottle nearby so you can remain hydrated.

  • Comfortable Clothing: Wear breathable, stretchable clothing that promotes full range of motion.


*Your instructor will offer modifications and alternatives to poses in all classes. She is well-versed in teaching classes to practitioners who don’t have props–so do not fret, props are not a requirement.


Yoga Class Camera Setup and Participation


A well-positioned camera is important so your instructor can see you and offer adjustments, variations, or additional alignment cues if needed. Here’s how to set it up:


  • Camera Angle: Place your device at a height where your entire body is visible from both standing and sitting vantage points. It’s often helpful to prop your device on a table or chair in front of your yoga mat so you can view from a comfortable distance and height.

  • Distance: Position yourself far enough from the camera so that your instructor can see your movements fully but close enough so that you can comfortably see the instructor.

  • Participation: If you need further explanation or clarification, please let your instructor know. She is happy to answer any questions you may have. It’s by no means a requirement to have your camera on during the class, but if you feel comfortable, having your camera on can foster a more interactive experience.


Tips for Engaging with Your Instructor


Connecting with your instructor is key to a gratifying online yoga experience. Here are some ways to create connection:


  • Provide Feedback: Your instructor welcomes feedback. Your feedback helps her give you the personalized experience you deserve!

  • Share Limitations: If you have any physical limitations, challenges, injuries, or concerns, feel free to email your instructor beforehand or tell her at the beginning of class. 


Addressing Distractions During Class


Distractions are inevitable–whether it’s a pet, family member, or a phone notification. Some advice on how to minimize them:


  • Turn Off Notifications: Silence your phone or computer notifications to avoid interruptions.

  • Close the Door: If you are practicing at home, let others in your household know the time and duration of your class in advance–if possible.

  • Pause If Needed: If you’re interrupted, don’t stress. It happens–that’s life. Simply pause, address the distraction, and return to class when you’re ready.


The teachings of yoga encourage patience and self-compassion, so if things that are out of your control crop up–give yourself some grace. Nothing is perfect!
